Loving yourself and others during the good times is easy… But how do we cope when times get hard or even unbearable? Are we able to stay strong or do we start thinking negative thoughts and start playing the blame game, pointing our finger to ourselves the most? How do we stay strong when we’re feeling weak? As our thoughts affect our reality, it is vital that we don’t put ourselves down. Otherwise, our subconscious will start picking up on these discouraging views we have about ourselves, this is why self-love is so important during the most crucial times when we’re down.
Do you sometimes have these moments where you’re wondering why your life isn’t going the way you planned? Perhaps you’re even doing everything in your power to make things happen but it feels like you’re stuck and everything is against you. Loving yourself and not giving up hope in these moments are often the hardest, though they are the most important moments to keep positive as they bring out the strongest emotions, often very negative and self-destructive.
How do we move away from our disparaging behaviour and shift our feelings into more positive and constructive ones so that we don’t end up creating what we fear the most? It is often too hard to feel positive when the world has kicked you while you’re down. So I find that in order to feel happy, I need to be able to reach a place of feeling neutral first. This way my conscious mind doesn’t immediately tell me that I’m fooling myself and discard any attempts that I make at feeling good.
It’s in times like these where I like to ask for a little extra help, this can be done through whatever belief system you have. If you try to face everything alone and don’t reach out to a higher power for assistance, it may all seem too much and getting yourself out of the negative state will be more difficult. Allow yourself to feel emotion, don’t keep it all bottled up. Accept that there will be times when you’re feeling weak, simply observing and acknowledging this is step in the right direction. Don’t wallow in these feelings, however, once you’ve noticed them, try and get yourself into a neutral place. Understand that this is just a passing phase and that you will be able to pick yourself back up again.
I find meditation really helps to take my focus off any destructive thoughts, by clearing my mind and getting my breathing pattern into a calm and relaxed state. Whether I feel good or not, I must remind myself that I love myself, that I need to take care of myself and that giving up is simply not an option. I like to meditate on increasing my self-love and appreciation for myself when I feel that I’m all alone in this world, as I know I’m always here for myself, I’m always dependable and I will never let myself down.
It’s so important to empower yourself, to know that you are the one person who is never going to deceive you, leave you or judge you. No matter what happens, no matter who leaves or treats you badly in life, you can rely on yourself for love, support, understanding and strength. We tend to look for love outside of ourselves all too often and sadly, this external love has the potential to let us down. When we love ourselves we know that this is a love that will never leave and this is why we must work on it every day. When our self-love is strong, no matter what happens, we will not be affected that greatly as we know that we are loved and we can get through anything.
