As with all my musings, I woke up one morning with the concept of seeds, destruction and growth running through my mind. Per usual, I had no idea where this was all going, that is, until I found out my favourite team-mate was going through a rough patch. In an attempt to lend a consoling hand, I mentioned to him that a seed has to completely and painfully deconstruct in order to grow through the dirt and muck before maturing into a strong and sturdy tree that reaches the light.
The sentiment reminded him of the Greek writer and poet Dinos Christianopolous who wrote “You did everything possible to bury me, but you forgot I am a seed”.
It took me a while to work out how this applied to life in general. I then realised that we are each and every-one of us a seed. You and I are a seed. We grow through our setbacks and challenges and without them, we remain dormant in the dirt, being covered with more and more muck until the conditions are absolutely perfect and the darkness as we know it, deconstructs.
This deconstruction from all we know, like and are familiar with is utterly painful. We have to totally change our genetic make-up to break through the shell-casing. And what for? Why do we go through this pain (or not in some cases), why do we need to break the shell to transform ourselves?
To answer simply, our transformation is a cycle of life. We grow into the light so we can experience all the beauty of life. We are our own tree of life.
We are learning to anchor ourselves in the ground by developing a strong root system. Incidentally, this root system is also the very structure that feeds and nourishes us, and draws out necessary nutrients from the muck we have been lying in for so long. As we anchor ourselves and give ourselves solid roots, we transform the muck into golden life force energy that propels us skyward. The more we open to these experiences and learn from them, the stronger and bolder and more life-affirming we can become.
As our beautiful stems grow stronger, upward toward the light, we mature and start to grow leaves and become able to nurture the life around us. Our limbs become solid places for birds to build nests, our leaves transform carbon dioxide into life, giving oxygen for the plants and animals around us. We begin to find our place in this world and know that even though we are one tree, we are integral to life on this planet.
We mature and grow and eventually we are able to make our own seeds. We realise we truly are a tree of life, from a tiny seed hidden in the dirt, we are an expression of life in all its glory, and we are now able to set our own seeds in the soil.
We get to sow the seeds of the future, grow new life-seeds which are aspects of ourselves. We can grow and sow the seeds of abundance, the seeds of love, the seeds of hope, joy and peace. We can grow and live any aspect of life we feel.
Some of the seeds we grow will mature and blossom into wonderful trees in their own right, some wont. And the beauty of those that don’t grow, is that in the next cycle of our life, we can adjust to sow more seeds in the direction of what we truly want.
We get to know the seeds, soils and conditions of planting that maximise what works for us, and we get to keep that, and grow even more from that knowledge.
From the actions of others throwing the worst possible things our way in the hope of stifling us, they have forgotten we are seeds. We will grow from adversity, toward the light. We get to dream big, think big and with each dream that passes, the seeds of a thousand more have been planted.
