We are all part of the human race, part of our local community, church, family, work and social gatherings. And yet our membership of each of these may mean nothing to us at times - it is as if we don't belong. Usually this is because of a point of contention, a mismatch perhaps between our views and other people's - something causes us or them to hold back.

If we allow this to continue, it is increasingly difficult to resume normal relationships. By then we may even have forgotten the original cause of our separation, and this makes it even harder to put things right. Fortunately there is a shortcut, which helps us to put aside our differences and re-establish our relationships, our sense of belonging. This shortcut is unconditional love - not the kind that says I will only love you, 'if', but the kind which accepts people as they are and makes no demands of the recipient. Often the mending can take place without anyone needing to be told - our change in approach and attitude, brought about by our decision to cope with other people's foibles ( without even 'just mentioning, for their own good, you understand' something which in reality would be deeply hurtful). People are just people, a mixture of good and bad, helpful and thoughtless, generous and mean, but we all share one characteristic - we all know that we are as worthwhile as anyone else, and no-one appreciates being belittled, particularly in front of others. By treating everyone as we would wish to be treated ourselves, we have the opportunity to sustain relationships, and to ensure that we are part of life, not lonely observers on the edge of existence.

The choice is ours.
